报告简介
题目:Unifying ecology and evolution to understand why very large and very small species exist
主讲人介绍:Professor Tim Coulson obtained his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of York, and a PhD from Imperial College, London. He then worked at the Institute of Zoology in London, Cambridge University and Imperial College London. He moved to Oxford in 2013 to take up the Professorship of Zoology and a Professorial fellowship at Jesus College. He was Head of the Department of Zoology and Biology at Oxford until October 2024. He is interested in how populations, communities and ecosystems respond to environmental change in both the short term and over longer periods of time, particularly in the ecological and evolutionary consequences of adding or removing apex predators from ecosystems. His approach is using mathematics to marry ecological and evolutionary theory that then test through observation and experimentation. He has worked with systems spanning invertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. He is also a populariser of science. His book “The Universal History of Us: a 13.8 billion year tale from the Big Bang to you” was published in 2024. It is currently being translated into Mandarin.
