There are two broad explanations for what maintains the diversity of ecological communities in nature: niche assembly and dispersal assembly. I will present a unified theory of these two assembly modes. I will then present a range of empirical data testing the theory's prediction that niche assembly predominates only in special situations where the immigration rate of new species is very low, while dispersal assembly predominates in most other situations.

Ryan Chisholm ，现为新加坡国立大学生物科学系副教授。本科毕业于澳大利亚墨尔本大学，于美国普林斯顿大学获得博士学位，后于巴拿马Smithsonian热带研究中心进行博士后研究。致力于通过数学、统计分析、计算机模拟等方法，探索热带森林群落中生物多样性的维持机制、生物多样性-生态系统功能关系。

目前主要研究方向为：多时空尺度生物多样性的维持机制及其对生态系统功能的影响。研究成果发表于Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature Communications, Ecology Letters 等杂志。
