报告内容简介

After an environmental shift inducing demographic decline, populations may avoid extinction via adaptive evolution, an eco-evo process called “evolutionary rescue”. In conservation it is desired, but in medicine it is often not.

The severity of environmental shifts often affects both demography and selection, obscuring the consequences on rescue. For example, while increasing drug concentration can more quickly eliminate susceptible strains, it often leads to a greater selective advantage of resistant strains. Thus, it remains controversial whether higher drug concentrations will inhibit resistance emergence. Moreover, pathogens, insects, and weeds vary greatly in their modes of reproduction, which can critically determine the likelihood of rescue by influencing genetic processes.

In this talk, I will use mathematical models to clarify the conditions when increased severity of environmental shifts promotes rescue and the impacts of reproductive modes on extinction risk. The results offer insights into how ecological and evolutionary processes interact to affect population persistence and improve the management of resistance evolution.
