Prof. Fang’s research has made significant contributions in the areas of ecosystem carbon cycling, biodiversity, remote sensing of vegetation, and plant stoichiometry.

In the area of carbon cycling research, he has developed methodology for estimating biomass and soil carbon stocks for forests, grasslands, and croplands in China, and quantified their changes over the past several decades (Fang et al. 2001, 2018; Piao et al. 2009). He and his colleagues have also conducted “the most up-to-date and thorough study” for carbon budget of global forests (Pan et al. 2011; Reich 2011). Recently, he led a research team to make a great contribution to the carbon budged study in China and published their works in a special feature in PNAS entitled “Carbon sequestration in China” (vol. 115, 2018, pages 4015-4056).

In the study of biodiversity, he has spent about 20 years to perform a systematic survey on plant species diversity across China’s mountains. Some of the achievements have been collectively published in a special issue of "patterns and causes of diversity in China" in Ecography (vol. 35, 2012, pages 1057-1184). He has also established the largest and most comprehensive database for China’s woody plants (Fang et al. 2011), which documents information on distribution, life form and environment for all the 11,405 woody plants across China. This work has been evaluated as “… the best collation of present knowledge” and “Definitive guide to China’s woody plants” (Eichhorn, 2011).

In the study of satellite-based vegetation and lake changes, he has carried out comprehensive analyses on vegetation dynamics, vegetation productivity, phenology, and desertification in China over the past decades (see a review by Zhao et al. 2012). Focusing on the changes of lakes across China, they found that most lakes in the Yangtze region had degraded significantly over the past half-century as a result of long-term impoldering (Fang et al. 2005, Zhao et al. 2005) and that surprisingly 34% of numbers of lakes in Inner Mongolia have been disappeared during the last 25 years due primarily to coal mining and irrigation activity (Tao et al. 2015). One of these works (Fang et al. 2005) has been used as a chapter of a US ecological handbook (Ebert-May & Hodder 2008).

Last but not the least, in the study of plant stoichiometry, he has explored large-scale patterns of plant nutrient elements, and proposed a plant nutrient balance hypothesis –"Stability of Limiting Elements Hypothesis”, which “…stimulate further empirical and theoretical studies of the patterns of multiple-element stoichiometry” (Yu & Elser, 2011).

To date, Prof. Fang has published over 420 peer-reviewed papers, including 17 papers in Science, Nature and PNAS, with a total of >27500 citations and h-index of 77. He has also made a number of invited presentations nationally and internationally, including a 45-min Plenary Lecture in the XIX International Botanical Congress (IBC2017) in Shenzhen, with more than 8000 participants.

He has served as editor, associate editor, or member of editorial board for 12 international scientific journals, and as director or member of various national and international organizations and committees. Due to his outstanding contributions in science and education, Prof. Fang has been recognized nationally and internationally through various awards. He was elected as the member of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005, the member of Academy of Sciences for the Developing World in 2008, and the member of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences in 2012.Prof. Fang has also been instrumental in the creations of a set key ecology laboratories and research groups across China, and in the establishment of the Department of Ecology in Peking University, one of the best Universities in China. In addition, Prof. Fang has made great efforts on consulting activities for Chinese governments and international organizations. As a member of the IPCC Review Committee, he participated in an independent evaluation on the IPCC Reports in 2010, which played an important role in the reform of the IPCC (Shapiro et al. 2010).
